Dragon Boat Races

Saturday, August 3rd, 2019

A dragon boat is 40-foot dragon headed boat that holds 20 paddlers, a steerer and a drummer. The tradition of dragon boating has its origins in China, and has become popular throughout the world.  In 2018, the Town of Waterford hosted its inaugural Dragon Boat Racing event, raising funds for the American Cancer Society. The event featured several teams made up of local businesses and community groups competing in heats throughout the day. The Waterford Fire Department took home the championship and will return in 2019 to defend their title. The Dragon Boat Races take place where the Mohawk meets the Hudson, below Lock E2 on the Erie Canal. Spectators can watch this exciting event from the Hurst Harbor Center (formerly the Waterford Visitor Center) or from surrounding areas like Peebles Island State Park or the Point just south of Lock E2. Dragon Boat Races are produced by the Town of Waterford.
